Area Recreation
Vistas of scenic loveliness may be reached by highways radiating from Boydton. A five-minute drive south or west brings you to the John H. Kerr Reservoir project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, on the Roanoke River. Within the project area of 106,860 acres, 57,960 acres are wooded and 48,900 acres form a beautiful lake that has a shoreline of 800 miles. In Virginia, the lake is better known as Buggs Island Lake. The lake forms a backdrop and furnishes the locale for many summer cottages, year-round homes and camping areas.
Whatever the season the lake is yours to enjoy.
There are 30 recreation areas around Kerr reservoir: campsites with electric & water hookups, swim beaches, picnic areas, hiking and nature trails, and marina are all available.
The Corps of Engineers manages 5 campgrounds and leases land to the states of North Carolina & Virginia which manage 8 other campgrounds. The seasons of operations vary, so please check on their website for detailed information.
There are 26 wildlife management areas on Kerr, totaling over 10,000 acres. A free "Guide to Wildlife Management Areas" is available at the Corps' Visitor Assistance Center or by mail.
